Drawing With Water: Making the Art for ALAN’S WAR Art on MoMA´s Floor in New York City
Feb 172010

I really want to be a tattoo artist! I know that you have to apprentice and it takes a while but I am willing to do everything needed to become a great tattoo artist. So, I hear that you should take art classes because you need to be a good artist. What kind of art classes would be the best to take?Should I take basic art classes in drawing, or are there more specialized art classes that will help me succeed in tattooing? Thanks for any help!

it took my four years of begging to get an apprenticeship but once your in your in if its something you truly want and you show that you are trying and learning. but its not a rock and roll lifestyle i would not discourage you but it is hard and takes alot of work and sometimes you make no money other nights you cant fit it in your pockets ….fine art calsses will help but the arts not the part you should focus on you need to be in a shop learning the proper way to clean, tune machines etc. if you have raw talent you will have time to work on honing your art skills ..goodluck find an apprenticeship they will help you from there..

I would say if you wanna do this right like you say you do, i have some questions. First of all do you like art? and do you practice much? All the classes will be painful if you really don’t like art.
Second is each artist has a style or specific thing they are known for. Have you done your research in the market? know what is hot or what is going on locally? These are the questions i ask.. dont be discouraged, but people make it because they do their homework. Try basic drawing courses..

Fine art classes and a lot of drawing helps

Where I get tattooed the owner gets kids coming in all the time asking to apprentice for him, he often gives them a couple of basic sketches to draw out and 99% of them never come back!

draw, draw and draw some more!
