Is there any martial art that you took that really boosted your confidence/attitude in defending before you started?
Did you ever have to use that martial art in self-defense?

I took a little bit of Tai Kwando ( that spelled right?? ) and Jujitsu, was gonna take kendo but all the classes got shut down….
Anyway I was small kid back then, like under 5′ till i hit 15 lol but i never had issues with confidence. I played football and skateboarded alot. I did use the stuff i learned a few times. Since i was little, people would try to mess with me, but I already was a good fighter and the stuff i learned really help with some people, mainly the guys that were 2-3x my size lol Dont have an issue now, i got more respect standing up for myself.
Now im 19 and still barely 5′7″ so still pretty short, but i can take my friend who is 18 and i think like 6′4″ or so and 268lbs… lol he’s a big dude, just cant let him pin me or its over!
Anyway you should look up the difference choices you have available to you, and look online to see what the different things you’ll be learning that suites you. Tai Kwando is more self defense and keeping on your feet, and usually “wrestling” your opponent to the ground. Where as Jujitsu was more of hands on defense, with offensive tactics and foot work. Those worked out good for me since football and skateboarding.
Ether way you should never be cocky about knowing martial arts, you should never attempt to fight people just too. Trust me i’ve hurt people ( defending my self ) not too bad but i’ve broken an arm and knocked this one kid unconsios.
Like i said, figure out what you have available to you, then look online and see which suties you best. Sometimes they will be diff too because certain trainers will mix in 2 or 3 other forms.
Study in Master Roshi’s Turtle School. It works, I felt more confident.
I started out in boxing
Then after getting my head bashed in coz I was slower then the guys I fought,
I got into Shitokai Karate. Where I learned that speed is not the key.
Yes, I have used my training in self defense. And I am confindent in my ability in protecting myself and those I am with.
i was taught BJJ and Aikido by my ex roommate, it wasn’t really the arts themselves that helped me be confident in defending myself, it was more my roommate.. the way he made sense of what to do and why and when or just showing me I could or telling me that I could.. he was a student of a student of Carlos Machado and a purple belt in BJJ, just knowing that lineage and his skill level made me more confident he was teaching me correctly but on top of that he built me up and outweighed me by about 40-45 pounds and was 4 inches taller than me.. if I could take him down I could take pretty much anybody I would encounter in daily life down if need be.. but only if need be.. we didn’t train much in Aikido or muay thai, but we did train a little bit.. he used to be an amateur MMA fighter but got a little older and settled down… but just the fact that I was trained by someone of that caliber and the fact that he built/talked me up made a huge difference in how I handle myself in dangerous situations.. I pick and choose my battles, but I would not fear if push came to shove.. and I like that confident feeling
I am going to take Hapkido once i get into a position to afford classes again.. i took BJJ for a couple months after my roommate moved but it got expensive actually going to a dojo.
I study Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Seidokan Karate, in Okinawa Japan which i consider home. I like this style a lot, tried taekwondo recently didnt like it so much, because it uses kicks, hand strikes, elbows, knees, locks, throws, and some weapons. I used to not be very confident in myself, and still am sometimes, but joining AFJROTC and Karate have increased my confidence greatly. I have never had to defend myself but i am sure that if i apply what i have learned that i could defend myself without great harm.
Muay thai and BJJ have done that.
Not only am I more confident, but alot more relaxed and much less prone to fight, as I don’t have to prove anything to anybody.
There are few circumstances when your martial art will help; A bar fight, traffic accident which turns into assault, fist-fight at a party from unwanted guests (other than street gang), school yard brawls (outside of street gangs), domestic violence attacks ie. date rapes, feuding neighbors, fist fights at sporting events, Mostly civilian against civilian disputes.
Things that it will NOT usually help hard core criminal activity; (real) gang fights, ie gang activity, other criminal activity such as home invasion robberies, drug dealers, bad debt with loan sharks, You enter a biker bar and they want your woman, antagonizing hard core criminals will, most likely, get you killed.
A toss where knowing a martial arts may help; robberies and serial rapist. The criminal may be low enough on the scale where they may not want to risk murder as a outcome.

If it were really easy to use martial arts to fight hardened criminals… why don’t we have a lot of vigilantes taking the law into their own hands to clean up our neighborhoods? Smart people know their limitations and the dumb people are dead.
Aikido but I havent continued it because of school in terms of self defense I’ve applied it to my stupid clasm8’s for fun lol. but not on real situations. taekwondo I’ve enjoyed a lot in many terms.
No matter what anyone says about taekwondo, it’s not the martial art! It’s the school. And unfortunately, many taekwondo dojangs are in fact McDojos. The school I went too definitely helped boost my confidence! I choose the school especially because it has self defense along with it! Luckily, I havn’t been in a scenario where it was necessary to self defense for real though XD but i know what to do if it ever happens, and definetly am prepared.
boxing.
Everyone that I have taken. Judo, jujitsu and shorin ryu all have prepared me to face many things. I know I am prepared to handle myself if and when needed. I have learned techniques from various others other arts but not limited to kung fu, bjj, tkd, aikido, etc. All of them are part of me as a martial artist
